Bank Account?

Beitrag von drewvictor » 06 Jun 2007 03:43

Alright, so Im still freakin out a little about money and how to take it.

I really wanted that credit card coz it didnt have any fees for overseas use, but no, they decided to decline me.

I was talkin to my friendly STA Travel guy, and he said that you can open a bank account over there.

Whats the go with that? I thought you needed a social security number, but apparently to open it you need a passport, and the address of where you are staying.

Coz if we can do that, then that would be the easiest way, and just use a US bank card and eftpos to my hearts content.

Penny for your thoughts?

Getting the SSN (Social Secuity Number) might take some time (until you finaly get it) and you might not get it at all.
Since 9/11 a lot of rules have changed - and even AuPairs staying for a whole year don't get it necessarily.
Ask your camp if they need it - if yes, you can use it and they should help you to get it.
If you don't get it, you can try to open an account without it - though a lot of banks don't do it without a SSN!

Oh yea!
If you open a bank account - that does NOT mean you get a credit!!!
You might get a ATM card that has a visa-symbol on it but you an only do debit transactions - not credit!
Americans take years to build up a credit line...

I have got a Westpac Mastercard Debit Card which is the same as an eftpos card but has to be linked to a bank account and you can either press savings button and get cash out, or press credit and sign for stuff. But there has to be money in your account to use the card. It's wideley accepted and no fees........i think.

Can you do a search for Bank of America say on the net and see if it lists what info you need to set up a bank account...or ask someone at your camp what's involved with setting up an account over there.

BoA says for NJ:
If you already have a Bank of America checking or savings account that you manage with Online Banking, and you aren't adding a coapplicant, you only need:

* Phone number
* Email address
* Online Banking ID and Passcode

Otherwise, you'll also need the following information for yourself and any coapplicants before you start:

* Social Security numbers
* Home address
* Credit card or bank account number for funding your new account (you can also fund your account after your account is open)
* Current email address
https://www2.bankofamerica.com//deposit ... cust_type=

As I said - ask your camp if you need a SSN and if they help you to get it.

you just want something reliable so you dont have hassles
why be worrying about money when you can be having so much fun !

Yeah im looking at the cash passport, except if i can find sumthing that doesnt slog me a lotta fees, that would be great...

I wanted something with EFTPOS capabilities, the cash passport you have to go find an atm, then carry cash around.

Cash passport now has a debit card too. You can use it like an eftpos card. Just ask at a Travelex dealer :D

the only drawback with the debit card is that you cant get cash out at an atm. that was the only reason i didnt get one !

I might get two types of card, one of the debit card variety, one for the atm, plus a 2nd card for each hidden elsewhere in my bags, just so im covered.
